Neverwhere was originally a television series for the UK, then he adapted it to book form - and fleshed it out some... i think it's discussed on the commentary track, even?
you can IMDB or look up the copyright on the tv series as well.
this may get up there in 'little known sci-fi bits' with the fact that hitchhiker's guide was originally a radio series ;)
