amalthya: (necklace)
I woke up feeling refreshed and alive this morning -- and man, I have so much going through my head that I'm twittery and jittery. jiggly jiggly

Before I commence with the events of the week, I wanted to say that yes, I am okay (as evidence by LJing, though that in and of itself isn't proof) and I should thank people especially who called and/or texted me during the Exam Hell. Even if they called me during my exams. Yes, you know who you are! Although I'm sure that the Katamari Theme Song was a festive start to anyone's exam period.

I'm desperate to write about my incredible night last night with [livejournal.com profile] rosefox! We went to see The Pirate Queen, a musical (loosely) based on the life of Grace (Granya) O'Malley, Irish Rogue. I don't know that I can equal the level of hilarity that we attained while summarizing for [livejournal.com profile] glib_dichotomy at her apartment after the show, but hell, I'll try.

I will start by saying it was a thoroughly enjoyable show. It was composed by the guys who did Les Mis and Miss Saigon. Which I discovered during the intermission, and it suddenly all made sense.

Jean Valjean, err, I mean Granya's father, had fantastic hair. Just stunning. Rose and I both wanted to share his hair-mojo with [livejournal.com profile] sunspiral, who he reminded us of.

Thankfully, I was not reminded of anyone I know while gazing upon the enormous codpieces highlighted (quite literally) in the show. And it wasn't their size, so much as their emphasis.

During one of the first male solos, we discovered that Granya's boyfriend "WILL BE THERE!" It was a crappy solo, but it was obvious that by "there" -- he meant his crotch. Wild gesticulation is only wild if it's undirected. But when it's wildly pointing to one's crotch, I wonder.

In fact, there did seem to be quite a lot of crotch in the "Sixteen Century" **
There was a bar scene which had the numerous old blue-hairs in the audience gasping and twittering while Donal, the Pirate Douchebag, shoved his crotch into many a lady's face while simulating, well, everything. I commented that I didn't think there'd been that much pelvic thrusting on Broadway since the Rocky Horror Show!

And it wasn't just us who thought so! We engaged in humorous discussion with our seat-neighbours about our thoughts thus far on the musical. And discovered that the woman to my left did, in fact, mean to come to the theater that night.

You see, I'd been confused when I smelled peanuts in the air during the middle of the first act and saw her eating them out of a bag. I automatically assumed she'd meant to go to the circus and had made a wrong turn around 60th and broadway and ended up at the Pirate Queen.

PEANUTS! *shakes head*

I guess the most egregious part of the musical that was about the sassiness of two independent female leaders -- Grace O'Malley and Queen Elizabeth I -- was that despite having everything, including freedom, independence and power, a woman is nothing without a MAN to love her. Not a person, not a child, not self-love, a MAN.

One of the best parts was really being there with [livejournal.com profile] rosefox
I could turn and make faces at her when something was funny, or squeal with the canons scared me or coo during scenes that were tender and sweet -- and when, once again, "Dick in a Box" permeated the culture ("Could he have gestured towards his groin one more time? All he needed was a box!") and we burst into joyous, semi-raucous laughter, at the theatre no less, I was just filled with glee and happiness.

And there were very tender moments, especially after Granya has given birth, and she realizes that while she wants to be like a man, if she were a man, she would never have the experience of childbirth or mothering. I loved that.

And of course, the set was awesome. And it had some very inspiring Les-Mis-like ensemble numbers.

Oh! The dancing! Traditional Irish dancing everywhere! It was incredible! There was also an Irish woman there singing and her voice just gave me chills.

It did make me want to take up "riverdancing" at least as a fun hobby, so I think when I come back from Europe I'll try it out with [livejournal.com profile] rosefox, who is game (hurrah!)

** Going to the theatre with an editor is always amusing, especially when she finds the best typos in the Playbill. I mean, the Sixteen Century is SO much hotter without that extra "th"

Which leads me into the perfect segué. I'll be away for the next month. Seriously.

Google Calendar: Laura, wtf are you doing to me?
Laura: I'm sorry gcal! It's what you were made for!
Google Calendar: More importantly, what are you doing to yourself?
Laura : Uh, what?
Google Calendar: : Are you aware that you are leaving for Ohio tomorrow? That you do not return until Monday, May 14th. And that you leave for France on Tuesday, May 15th.
Laura : Uh, yea?
Google Calendar : When will you have time to pack? I barely even have time or space to include both of these items. Why you do this to me, Dimmy?
Laura : Shut up and take it, gcal. If I can do it, so can you. We're supposed to be a team!
Google Calendar : I'll cut you, bitch.

Speaking of which, don't forget to ask for a postcard. And, if you're not a livejournal user, feel free to post your address in the comments. They're screened (ie secret/hidden from the public)

Man, I'm such a nut, eating pistachios and drinking almond milk

1. Follow the rotation of the dots. They remain pink.
2. Pay a bit of attention to the center cross. The pink dots remain, but the rotating spot is green. (This part didn't work for me either)
3. THE COOLEST PART! Really focus on the center cross. The pink dots disappear as the blank spot (looks green) passes over them. If you shift your eyes off the center, they return. Refocus, and they check out again, one at a time.
