I have to admit, I've been a little concerned for you, seeing some of the things you mention (and I don't know whether it's more reassuring to know that I'm deeply fond of you despite knowing about all this or disheartening that it was perhaps not as hidden as you might have thought). Often, it would catch me off-guard, because it seemed--as odd as this sounds coming from someone who hasn't known you long--that the nights of drinking and the scholastic procrastination were out of character, mannerisms left over from some earlier self or circumstance that no longer applied to you-here-now. Finally I decided I was most likely just seeing you mid-transition and you would sort it out on your own, so I stopped worrying.

It's nice to have that prediction borne out. *) I think--and hope--you'll find it pretty easy to shed the self-destructive behavior and emerge with new and brilliant colors. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to support you in it; I may tease you (and let me know if that gets to be too much, because I can't always tell when I overdo that sort of thing) but I'm also always happy to go out not-drinking with you or introduce you to yummy new raw foods or hunt down choirs that are holding auditions.

Transition stages are always rough. Hang in there. I promise it gets better, and then after that it gets much much better.
