Well, today was far more exciting than I expected it to be. Some strange guys had come and moved into one of our warehouses, telling us that Kasuku, the landlord, had given them the key and told them to just go ahead.
When I called Kasuku to find out "wtf?" he basically said that he wanted us to move out within a month and go somewhere else.
I will admit that panic ensued. It took Liz forever to find this house, and it's actually perfect for our needs and the chimpanzees'. I don't want to have our lease broken.
So, I figured I'd go the diplomatic route. I talked to the manager who is moving into the depot -- a space that we aren't using -- to find out what exactly his arrangement with Kasuku was and what he really needed.
I think we can come to an arrangement, but I did let him know that legally, the space is ours right now, and that if we can't figure it out with Kasuku that he IS going to have to leave.
I'll add too that I found out that Kasuku tried to screw us because they were willing to pay $900/month for the compound to our $700. It was a $200 screw, basically. Luckily, the ball comes back into our court too because we discovered that Kasuku doesn't really OWN the house -- he's just the proprietor. And it turns out that the owner is the brother of a JGI-Goma employee.
It still ended up being a bit of a stressful day, and I'm 90% sure that vodacom really screwed me because I can't have talked for $20 worth of airtime. I did feel somehow empowered working things out without anyone else here, but I think having the whole brother thing really improves the situation.
