I figured today should be an entry day so that I could talk like a pirate, if only just once.

I'm feeling pretty happy and good. I went with Rachel ([livejournal.com profile] astralina) last night to see Pink Martini. The show was SO incredible. I'm usually snotty and judgmental when it comes to female performers, but China Forbes, their lead singer, just had the most amazing tambor and tone and was so much fun to listen to.

It was sort of a combination of Stan Kenton Girl-From-Ipanema era music and Arturo Sandoval. Which made me very happy. I danced in the aisles, and there was a particular song that even made me cry.

I'm really enjoying my various classes, even though yes, it's a busy schedule and I practically have a graduate student's reading load (nods at [livejournal.com profile] failedoptimist). Tuesdays are nice days, because I finish at 2 pm and basically have the day to catch up.

Today, for example, is Johnny's birthday, so I went to the grocery store and bought cake mix and baked him a cake. I haven't decorated it yet, but I certainly am reminded of Africa when I squeeze through the aisles of Manhattan grocery stores. I'm not sure why they bother with carts, because they don't fit through the aisles.

There was actually an interesting piece in the NY Times Science Times today about designing stores to encourage people to shop more. In fact, if you engage in the "butt brush" where the aisle is not big enough to accommodate two bottoms and they TOUCH that people will actually leave the store! Which I contemplated doing. Being crammed also inhibited me from seeing where the chocolate frosting was.

Additionally, they only had number candles in 5, 6, 7 and 8. So, the youngest birthday I would have been able to celebrate for Johnny would have been 55.

I do not think he would have been happy about that...

Anyway, the routine feels good. I have a lot of damned reading to do still, but I have a long busride down to the East Village tonight. Hurrah!
